Tata Motors to launch upgraded Nano by mid-January 2011

Tata Motors will launch an upgraded version of its small car Nano by middle of January next year. Currently Nano sales have been declined with just 509 Nanos selling in the month of November 2010.

Tata Motors is working on innovative plans to boost the Nano sales. The manufacturing  facility in Sanand has a capacity of 2,60,000 Nanos per annum and currently the production has been almost stand still. Fire issues, lack of boot space, engine noice are some of the reasons which has caused the decline in the Nano sales. Tata Motors is trying desperately to build back the confidence in its customers. The company has also announced to add some safety features in already sold Nanos free of cost.

The upgraded Nano will have power steering and 5 speed gearbox for better fuel efficiency at higher speeds. An openable tailgate, restyled interiors and a more powerful 3 cylinder engine is also on the cards. A diesel powered Nano will also be launched some time in mid 2011.

The upgraded Nano will be priced 5-10% more than the existing model. The base Nano is priced at Rs. 1.57 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) as compared to its nearest rival Maruti Alto at Rs 2.53 lakh.
