Toyota has unveiled facelifted Corolla Altis in Malaysia, do we get it in India?

Japanese automobile giant Toyota has unveiled the facelifted Corolla Altis in Malaysia. Since Corolla Altis was recently launched (a year ago) in India, we guess we have to wait for some time to see the car on our roads.

The facelifted Altis has undergone some important changes in exterior, interior as well as under the hood. In the exterior it sports a new grill which looks similar to the earlier generation Innova, new headlamps powered by HID lamps mounted in smoked glass enclosure and newly designed taillamps. The major change in the Interior is the three spoke steering wheel and paddle shifters.




In the engine department, Toyota has planted a 2.0ltr dual VVTI engine in place of 1.6ltr engine coupled with a CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) gearbox. The new engine and gearbox further boost the fuel efficiency.

Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Petrol launched in India

     Volkswagen India has launched more powerful Polo with 1.6L Petrol engine in India priced at Rs 6.16 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.


     The Polo 1.6 is powered by a 4 cylinder 1598 cc engine with power output of 103.63bhp @ 5250rpm and torque of 15.6kgm @ 3759rpm. The engine is the same one powering the Vento petrol sedan. The engine is mated to a 5 speed manual gear box.

Maruti Suzuki A Star Automatic launched in India

     On the 63rd Indian Independence day, Maruti launched an Automatic Transmission variant of its popular hatch back A Star priced at Rs 4.34 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.




     The A Star Automatic is available in only one variant – Vxi with ABS and EBD as standard fitment. A Star competes with Hyundai’s i10 Automatic which is Rs 22,000/- costlier than the former. A Star Automatic delivers fuel economy of 17 kmpl as compared to 16.67 kmpl by its Hyundai counterpart.

Chevrolet Beat LPG and Diesel to be launched by year end

     Chevrolet will launch the LPG variant and a Diesel powered Beat small car in Indian market by this year end. Chevrolet Beat LPG was spied during its test run near its factory at Talegon.


     General Motors has invested Rs 5000 crores for setting up its new engine plant which will be operational by November this year. The plant will have a capacity of 1,60,000 engines per year manufacturing both Petrol and Diesel power trains.


     The small diesel engine which will be fit into the Beat will be manufactured in the same plant. The engine will use 1.3L Multi Jet technology with one cylinder less. This makes the engine to be under 1.0L and hence lighter. It is expected to deliver power of 55 to 60 bhp which will be very good for a small car.

Maruti launches CNG variants of Alto, Eeco, Estilo, Wagon R and SX4

India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki launched CNG variants of 5 cars – Alto, Eeco, Estilo, Wagon R and SX4 which can run both on Petrol and CNG. The price of CNG variants ranges from Rs 3.23 lakh to Rs 7.47 lakh ex showroom New Delhi.



Maruti is desperate to regain the supremacy in the Indian automotive industry which it has dominated for more than 15 years. With more number of small cars being launched by other manufacturers, Maruti’s share has been falling for a while. With the launch of these 5 new CNG variants Maruti looks forward to gain more margins in its profits. Also in the pipeline is A star Automatic which will be launched soon.

VW Polo 1.6 caught in Chakan Plant

     Indianautosblog editor Mr Shrawan happen to click the picture of the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 at the Chakan plant waiting to run for the test track. VW had plans to launch Polo 1.6 somewhere at this time in India, but due to huge waiting peroid for the regular Polos the company has shelved the plan to launch it soon.

     Polo 1.6 with its powerful engine is expected to carve a niche for itself with young performance oriented people option for it. The current Polo with 1.2 L engine though is fuel efficient, lack the performance punch especially on the highways.

     Polo's 1.6 liter petrol engine develops 103.5 bhp of max power and 15.6 kgm of max torque. It is flat 3 seconds quicker than its 1.2 L sibling in 0-100 km mark and cruise to the top speed of 184 kmph.

     VW showrooms have already started booking the Polo 1.6 with a booking amount of Rs 50,000. But neither the showrooms nor the company have disclosed any information about the Polo 1.6 launch at its price.

Honda Jazz X launched in India

     Honda cars has launched a new variant of its premium hatchback Jazz christened Jazz X in India priced at Rs 7.53 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) with a premium of Rs 42,000/- over the current Jazz.


     Jazz X comes with modifications to both exterior as well as interior. In the exterior, Jazz X sports alloy wheels, new front fog lamps, new grill and rear spoiler. In the interior, Honda has added a USB port to the audio system, rear parcel shelf, height adjustable driver seat and blue black combination of seat colours.

     Under the hood Jazz X has no changes and will be powered by the same 1198 cc SOHC i-VTEC petrol engine with max power of 90 PS@6200rpm and max torque of 110Nm@4800rpm.

     Along with other colours Jazz X is offered with a new colour - Rallye Red. The exisiting colours on Jazz are Tafetta White, Alabaster Silver, Crystal Black Pearl, Sherbet Blue and Deep Sapphire Blue.

Maruti Alto K10 launched in India

     Maruti Suzuki has launched Alto K10 in India priced at Rs 3.03 lakh and Rs 3.16 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) for LXi and VXi model respectively. Alto K10 is powered by a 998cc K series petrol engine which is also seen in other Maruti vehicles such as Wagon R and A-Star. Apart from engine change the Alto K10 has some cosmetic changes as well.


     In the Exterior, there is a new bumper in the front, new head lamps and a new grill which all together increase the size of the nose and hence the length of the car. In the rear the bumper has been re-designed and so do the tail gate which accommodate the number plate unlike the earlier model in which the number plate was incorporated in the bumper. The tail lamps are also re-designed with a round break lights looking prominent.

     In the Interior, there is all new steering wheel borrowed from Wagon R and many other features such as front power windows, 12v power socket, parcel shelf, colour coordinated fabrics, engine immobilizer etc.

     In the performance category the new Alto K10 does 0-100 kmph in jus 13.3 seconds. It also gets a new cable operated gearbox, upgraded brakes and stiffened suspension. In-spite of more powerful engine Alto K10 returns mileage of 20.2 kmpl according to ARAI.

Volkswagen small car to be named 'Lupo'

     Volkswagen has been developing a small car to be positioned below the Polo hatchback. The small car based on the 'UP!' concept will be named Lupo. Volkswagen produced Lupo to position below the Golf from 1999 to 2005. Now Lupo will find a place below the Polo which would give large volumes to the company. Lupo falls under a new family which Volkswagon has titled ‘New Small Family’ (NSF).

     The 'UP!' based small car will be also be made by Volkswagen’s subsidiaries Audi, Seat and Skoda in their own versions. The Lupo is also expected to make it to India and positioned below the Polo at Rs 4 lakh. The Indian Lupo might come with a 1 L petrol K Series engine sourced from Suzuki.

Chevrolet Tavera to get Rhino engine

     Since the Chevrolet Tavera did not meet the new BS IV emission norms, it was pulled out from BS IV cities. Now Chevrolet has planned to source the engine from local manufacturer ICML. The engine sourced will be a sub 2 liter diesel with 100 bhp which does the duty in ICML Rhino MUV.


     Chevrolet Tavera was powered by a 2.5 liter diesel which did not meet the BS IV emission norms. Hence it had to be pulled out by major cities which caused drastic fall in the MUV sales.

     Chevrolet will launch the ICML engine powered Tavera by the end of this year and hopes to boost sales in MUV segment.

Nissan Micra priced very competitively at Rs. 3.98 lakh

     Nissan has competitively priced its small car Micra at Rs. 3.98 lakh for the base petrol model (XE) ex-showroom New Delhi. The top end petrol model (XV) is priced at Rs 5.28 lakh.


     Micra competes with Maruti Swift, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20, Fiat Grande Punto and Tata Indica Vista. The base model of Swift is priced at Rs. 3.99 lakh where as the base Polo costs Rs 4.42 lakh (All prices ex-showroom New Delhi). The only car in the segment priced lower than Micra is Figo which is priced at Rs. 3.53 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) for the base petrol variant.

Volkswagen Vento launched in India

     Volkswagen has launched a premium sedan christened Vento in India. Vento is built on the Polo hatchback platform. The car will be availabe for purchase only by September-October this year. Though the specifications of Vento has been released, the company is mum on the price details. We expect it to be priced between Rs 7-9 lakh.


     Vento seam to give a strong competition to market leader Honda City. Since City has only petrol motor, Vento with its diesel oil burner has an advantage to take away the competition.

Ford Figo bookings reaching 25,000 mark

     Ford India has already recieved 24,000 bookings for its small car Figo in a span of just 4 months since its launch. The booking is still counting is close to 25,000.


     Ford India has started 2nd shift at its Maraimalainagar plant in Chennai due to overwhelming demand for Figo in India. Ford will increase its employees number by over 600 in few days. The company is working on to increase its dealer outlets to 185 by the end of this year.

Mahindra to re-launch Kinetic Boss 115cc

     Mahindra is keen to make its foot hold strong in the 2 wheeler segment. After its take over from Kinetic Mahindra has re launched products which was earlier in the name of Kinetic namely Flyte and Duro with slight modifications. However Rodeo is an exception which has a distinct stlying.


    Now Mahindra wants to re-launch the Kinetic Boss 115cc entry level motorcycle. The bike has been codenamed as A01 and is likely to be priced between Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000. Expect few cosmetic changes in this entry level motorcycle. A 200cc performance motorcycle is also on the cards which will be built in collaboration with SYM motors.

Mercedes Benz low floor buses to hit Indian roads


     To cater to the Indian urban needs Mercedes Benz has decided to launch low floor city buses. A prototype with capacity of 38 person low floor city bus was showcased recently. At present the company has 2-axle and 3-axle inter city luxury coaches in India.

     The company plans to set up a dedicated assembly line that will cater to the production requirements of the city buses. The new body building facility for the city buses will be set up at Pune.

     Mercedes will send prototypes of the city buses to various cities and take feedback from urban commuters. Based on the feedback the company will fine tune the vehicle as per the commuter requirements. This would take about 6 to 9 months before the final batch of buses roll out. We can expect the new Mercedes city buses by early next year.

     The demand for low floor city buses has risen exponentially in India, Thanks to JnNRUM and promotion of public transport system. Mercedes estimates to produce and sell 500 units of these buses per annum.

Hyundai Verna Transform launched in India

     Hyundai Motor India has launched the facelifted Verna termed ‘Transform’. The company calls it as ‘Dynamic by DNA’ luxury sedan. The Verna Transform has only cosmetic changes and there is no change in the technical specification what so ever.


     The cosmetic changes in the Verna Transform are - new headlamps, radiator grill and bumper. The rear also gets some cosmetic changes and so do the interiors. Two petrol and three diesel variants are available with the top end diesel variant having automatic transmission option.

     The Hyundai Verna Transform is priced in the range of Rs 6.55 to 7.50 lakh for the petrol and Rs 7.87 to 9.21 lakh for the diesel variants.

Peugeot planning to re-enter India

     Europe’s second largest auto manufacturer Peugeot Citroen is planning to re-enter Indian market. The company is in search for the location in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to set up its manufacturing plant.

     According to the research conducted by the company last year, it is likely to bring in its hatchback 307 and sedan C5 in India. C5 sedan had been spotted testing in Bangalore few months ago.

     Peugeot had discussions with ARAI regarding understating of regulations and homologation for its products in India. The company officials have confirmed the report of them approaching Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh Govt.

     The company has already had discussions with the Automotive Research Association of India to understand the regulations and homologation (making the vehicles meet the Indian rules and norm) needs for its products, the sources said.

     "The global economic crisis has slowed the plans and that the company is strongly in favour of operations in India as and when conditions become favorable." said Mr Rajesh Nellore Vice President India, Peugeot Citroen.

Next Generation Suzuki Swift revealed in Hungary

     The next generation Suzuki Swift slated for 2011 has been revealed in Hungary. The new Swift is ligher, longer and more spacious that its older sibling. The new Swift is also has better dynamics, increased performance and reduced CO2 emissions.

     The wheelbase has been increased by mm and overall lenght by mm. The increase in wheelbase might create more space for rear passengers. Use of high strength steel has made the car chassis ligher and stiffer. Front brakes and Rear brakes are wider by 10mm and 5mm respectively.

Scoop: 2011 Suzuki Swift caught without camouflage

     The spy pictures of the next generation Suzuki Swift has been doing rounds in the net for a while. But nothing like this pictures without camouflage had surfaced earlier. The pictures show the rear end of the Swift which looks similar to the present model with little modifications. The tail lights tapper with more angular edges and blend neatly with the boot. With these image we can comment little on the car but Suzuki would have done their job to provide good leg space at the rear which is lacking in the present model.
