Start your Hyundai with a smart phone by 2014

Hyundai’s Near Field Communication and Blue Link technology to make cars more technologically advance.

Starting a car with the mobile phone is not far away. Be it banking or food processing, technology is moving forward to reach the common man and the automobile industry is not lagging behind. Hyundai recently demonstrated smart phone based connectivity concept for cars. Using smart phone NFC (Near Field Communication) Hyundai wants to use smart phones to unlock the car and to start it as well. Isn’t it technology at its best? Well how does it happen? Here it is...

You have to just swipe your smart phone at a sensor placed outside driver’s door and the car unlocks. Again by swiping the phone at the on-board touch screen you can start the car which means there will be no key knob. Paring the smart phone with the touch screen you can sync all your contacts and apps along with navigation destinations and streaming audio. With voice recognition features you can shout any commands and the system will respond to it, helping the drivers searching and reaching the destination easily.

Google has announced that Hyundai and Kia will integrate Google Maps and Places into its telematics systems. Hyundai’s Blue Link technology and Kia’s UVO services will soon help drivers to use Google Maps and Places on board the car. Since all these features are based on current technology, they could be available as early as 2014. So does the next generation i10 come with all these features? We feel definitely it does as Hyundai are good at tapping the market before anybody does.

Outstanding features of the EcoBoost turbo petrol engine


     The 1 Liter EcoBoost turbo petrol engine comes with a small, low-inertia turbocharger that spools up quickly and also comes with an overboost function.

     The engine comes with variable timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts which work in two ways, by increasing power and torque when your right foot demands by offering a higher lift and by lowering the valve lift during cruising to reduce fuel consumption.

     A water-cooled exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head lowers exhaust temperatures and delivers an optimal fuel-to-air ratio at all engine speeds to improve fuel economy across the rev range.

     Offset crank and variable oil pump to improve engine performance and lubricate the engine thoroughly by varying oil pressure more accurately at different rpms.

     High pressure solenoid direct injectors are located centrally and this positioning helps to provide a much more cooler and denser fuel-to-air ratio, delivering better combustion and higher fuel economy.

     Dual-split cooling system with two thermostats which supports a quicker engine warm up, reduced friction within the engine, lower fuel consumption and less emissions when engine is cold.


     Cambelt running in oil results in low friction and noise levels. This will lead to zero maintenance across the life of the EcoBoost 1 liter engine.

     Unbalanced flywheel/pulley is a brand new design to counter the vibrations that three cylinder engines produce due to their inherent design. The unbalanced flywheel/pulley obviates the need of a balancer shaft by functioning like one.

A bike with 110 kmpl mileage? Here it is

     Four Bangalore based engineering students have designed a diesel engine powered motorcycle which delivers 110 Km per liter. The students are from M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bangalore . They designed a diesel motorcycle with auto clutch and gear guided by Dr. S.V. Prakash, the student’s project guide. The four students are Sanjay Bhushan, Nadeem Anwar, Tony Paul and Naveen who are in final year of their engineering course.


     The project was not easy for them. They worked for four months on the project in many workshops in Bangalore and Coimbatore . They spend around Rs. 72,000/- on the project and one of the students said the production cost can be reduced to Rs. 55,000 to 60,000/- if the vehicle is produced in mass.


     The students used a Kinetic Blaze and equipped it with a Bullet engine along with many other alterations. The 325cc bullet motor was reduced to 200cc, the flywheel weight was decreased by 7 Kgs and the max power was also decreased from 6.5 Bhp to 3.5 Bhp.


     The main highlight of this bike is its high mileage. The running cost of this bike is just 40 paise as compared to Rs. 1.70 of that of a regular petrol engined motorcycle. The auto clutch and gears ensure smooth operation and less pollution. Along with this the shelf life of diesel engine is almost double that of a petrol engine hence it is more durable.


India’s one of the largest engineering conglomerate Kirloskar Group has shown interest in the project and have offered any assistance needed by the students.

Optimized Gear Ratios:
     The smart technology helps the manual and DSG transmission to optimize for longer ratios, early upshifts and delayed downshifts for increased energy efficiency for smarter drivability.








Auto Start Stop:
     The Auto Start stop mechanism works mainly during city traffic. The engine automatically turns off when you take the foot off the clutch in case of manual transmission. In case of DSG transmission the engine shuts of when you take the foot off the accelerator. With the depressing of the clutch (manual transmission) or accelerator (DSG transmission) the engine restarts automatically. In the process precious fuel is saved automatically.


Brake Energy Recuperation:
     During braking, the kinetic energy is converted into electricity and stored in the battery. So the act of braking recharges the battery – the more you brake, the further you can go.










Gear Shift Indicator:
     This feature helps the driver to shift gears at optimum time preventing the energy loss while shifting gears. This inturn adds up to the fuel efficiency.
