Volkswagen to reposition Skoda brand in India

Good news for Skoda lovers. Volkswagen has decided to reposition Skoda brand; that is Skoda will be positioned below the Volkswagen. This can happen only if Skoda car prices are reduced which is good news. Volkswagen owns Skoda and Audi and all over the world the parent VW sits between Skoda and Audi in terms of brand value. Here in India Skoda and Volkswagen have similar brand value which is seriously hampering Volkswagen’s brand image.

Skoda with its first vehicle in India ‘Octavia’ has built a reputation of a luxury car maker. The launch of Superb and Fabia which are best in terms of luxury in their respective class has put Skoda brand at the top of the chart. The Larua took off from where Octavia left. Having a good brand value is an asset to the company. But here the parent company Volkswagen thinks otherwise because Skoda is seriously denting Volkswagen’s image in India.

Volkswagen known to make quality cars is struggling to build the brand. Rivals such as Hyundai and Ford are delivering products which are better value for money cars. Volkswagen cars are no doubt the best in their class but somehow are not able to sell in numbers the company expect.  With reducing Skoda car prices Volkswagen can position itself clearly where it deserves to be, but in India it will take some time, may be another 2 to 3 years.

The most striking feature is in the rear which gets sharp tail lamps which resembles with current generation Volkswagen and Audi.

Apart from the front and rear changes there is absolutely no change in the overall design of the car. There will be no change in the chassis, suspension and engine department.

Skoda to replace stolen logos on its cars

Logos of cars are as attractive as the cars themselves and no wonder thieves have a special eye on them. We often see car logo mission on cars and if you think they have fallen off, think twice. The new trend of steeling logos has arrived and why not a Mercedes logo costs more than a branded stereo system.

Skoda as a good will gesture to its customers has decided to replace the stolen logo on its cars. Skoda Fabia front logo cost Rs. 600 and Skoda Yeti's rear one cost Rs. 1500. Skoda do not want its customers to run its cars without them, after all logos on the cars build the brand value. Hope other manufacturers are also listening.

Skoda Rapid microsite goes live, car launch on 16th November

Skoda Auto will launch its new midsize sedan in India on the 16th of this month. As the launch date comes closer, there Skoda Rapid’s microsite goes live. However you will not get many details about the car as of now.

Skoda Rapid is based on Volkswagen Vento platform and shares the same engines with the later. The Skoda Rapid will come in 3 variants - Active, Ambition and Elegance. Since there is sharing of platform, Skoda might have saved much of the cost which is expected to be passed on to the customer. The Rapid is likely to be priced between Rs. 7-9 lakh.

The Rapid in the front reminds us of the Fabia hatch with its prominent Skoda grill. The rest of the car is Vento, as we have said earlier that Rapid shares its platform with the Vento. Only in the rear, the crease on the sides of number plate gives some differentiation with the Vento.

The strategy between Skoda and Volkswagen is not still understood. They both have a same car with different names and of course will come with different price tags. How will Skoda and Volkswagen convince the customer to buy their own product? Let us see how this strategy works in India.

Check out the Skoda Rapid microsite

Its Skoda Rapid and not Lauretta, launch in November

In our earlier post we had mentioned that the new Skoda’s mid-size sedan will be named Lauretta. But now it is official that the car indeed will be called Rapid and not Lauretta.

Unveiling the car today at CNBC Car n Bike show, Dr. Oliver Gruenberg announced the name of the car as ‘Rapid’ and the car will be available for sale from November this year. Dr. Oliver also talked about the design theme and engine options of the car.

The design has been carried from the Volkswagen Vento and you can hardly differentiate Rapid from side and rear profile. However the front end has distinctive Skoda Fabia look. The tail lamps though look like the Vento’s it is little different with C shape lighting as seen in the Laura.

The ‘Rapid’ bridges the gap between Fabia and Larua in Skoda India family. The ‘Rapid’ is surely give a run for the money in the C segment which is already crowded with new launched such as All new Fiesta, Fluidic Verna and SX4 diesel. Expect the Rapid to cost around Rs. 10 lakh.

Skoda Fabia Scout spied testing in India

Our friend BurnYourFuel has got us the spy picture of the Skoda Fabia Scout being tested in India. The Fabia Scout is a kind of offroader based on the Fabia hatchback. It is the same engine from Fabia hatchback that powers the Fabia Scout. The Faiba Scout has added plastic trim on the lower half of the car with a diffuser on the rear bumper. We suspect the suspension would have tweeked and raised litte for the car to do the off-roading.

Skoda seams to be in an expansion mode since it is preparing to launch the Rapid sedan soon. With the Fabia Scout and Rapid sedan, Skoda could boost its sales in India.

Skoda Rapid ready for India, spied testing in Aurangabad

Indianautosblog has published couple of spy pictures of the Skoda Rapid being tested in India. The spy picture has been taken by Mr. Pranjal from Aurangabad.

Skoda Rapid is Skoda's new car for India, built on the VW Vento platform. There was a big gap in Skoda's portfolio between the Fabia and Laura after retirement of Octavia. The company also need an entry level sedan to stay in the competition, hench the new Rapid evolved. Speculation about  a sedan version of  the Fabia hatchback was also considered but finally Skoda stuck to develop an all new car based on a new concept - Vision D.

Vision D concept was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show 2011. The company had hinted about a new car on this concpet, but no body would have guessed the speed with which Skoda could develop and bring the car to India. Skoda Rapid, as it is expected to be called, will be launched with a strip down model with couple of features excluded, to compete with SX4 diesel and New Ford Fiesta.

Skoda Rapid to be built on Vento platform

Skoda will build a new sedan on the VW Vento platform for the Indian market. Skoda has many times mentioned the name ‘Rapid’ and hence the new car could be called Skoda Rapid. The Rapid sedan design language will be based on the Vision D concept show in Geneva.

Skoda Rapid expected to be launched by this Diwali will be powered by same VW 1.6L petrol and diesel engines, both developing 105 Bhp of power. As this would camouflage the Vento, Skoda will price it below the Vento and will remove couple of features as well in the Rapid.

A strip down Rapid is also on the cards with a fine tuned diesel engine which can take on the Maruti Suzuki SX4. Skoda is planning to launch it with price tag of Rs. 7 lakh for petrol and Rs. 7.80 lakh for diesel variant.

Skoda releases new logo, unveils concept car at Geneva Motor Show

Skoda unveiled its new logo at the Geneva Motor Show. The new logo features flying arrow in green colour encircled with a chrome ring. The major change seen is the absence of ‘Skoda Auto’ on the logo. The logo also comes with a tag line “The New Power of Skoda”. Skoda will use the new logo on its cars from now on and the dealerships would update the logo very soon.

Along with the new logo, Skoda also unveiled a concept sedan called Skoda VisionD. The VisionD concept seaming to be built on the Octavia platform might replace the current Octavia in the future.

The VisionD concept reflects Skoda’s new design language. Though the concept has been conceptualized from the scratch, a typical Skoda like design is evident. The notable inclusion in the concept is the extended wheelbase and coupe like trunk. The extended wheelbase gives more comfort and luxury to the passengers and newly designed boot provides extra luggage storage space.

The Vision D concept is an example of the future Skoda cars. The C shaped tail lamps, extra lines and corners are the main features of the concept. The grill still looks very familiar to the current Skoda cars.
