Mahindra to enter small car segment in India

India’s utility vehicle major Mahindra is planning to enter the small car segment in India. It is learned that Mahindra is developing a new platform for small cars in its new facility at Chennai. The small car is expected to be launched by 2014 in the price range of Rs. 2 – 5 lakh.

Mahindra will have a huge task cut out as the players in the small car segment has already capitalised the market. Mahindra has to bring in its vast experience in making rugged vehicles to its small car and give its customers value for money.

Along with the small car Mahindra is also planning to built cars on Logon platform. A Verito hatch which is already in its testing conditions will make its presence very soon. Mahindra will also look to synergise Reva operations with these new projects.

Mahindra to reopen XUV500 bookings from June 8th

Mahindra will reopen XUV500 bookings from June 8th 2012. This is the third time, the bookings of XUV500 have been opened, and the first two was closed after a strong response from the customers. This time the SUV will be available across India which earlier was restricted to 19 cities.

Mahindra received over 25,000 bookings in the first eight months of XUV500 launch of which around 7,200 vehicles have been delivered. Mahindra has ramped up the production capacity to 3000 vehicles per month in January 2012 which will to go up to 4000 per month soon.

Mahindra was played carefully with the XUV500 launch after the failure of Xylo MUV. Unlike the Xylo, XUV500 production capacity was built for small volumes which could later be ramped further. Till now XUV500 has got good response from the customers, but still Mahindra has to improve the quality of its vehicles to compete against International players.

Next Generation Mahindra Scorpio in the making

India’s largest utility vehicle manufacturer Mahindra has started working on the next generation Scorpio codenamed W201. The Scorpio has been a highly successful vehicle and it will not be wrong if we say Scorpio changed Mahindra’s fortune. Being in the market for over 10 years, Scorpio is still the favorite SUV to own under Rs. 10 lakh. Mahindra managed to sell over 50,000 units in a single year last year.

The new Scorpio will not have monocoque chassis like the XUV500 but instead will be built on heavily modified version of current Scorpio. Mahindra believes latter-on-frame layout suits best for urban and rural markets and hence the new Scorpio will have one. The new Scorpio will have extended wheelbase, which means the third row will be more spacious now. A pick-up version will also be made for exporting to overseas markets.

As far as the styling is concerned expect it to borrow some from XUV500. The new Scorpio will feature a new front grill, LED running lights and all the latest gadgets and gizmos. The new mHawk engine which produces 140bhp and 340 Nm of Torque will find its place under the new Scorpio’s hood.

Mahindra working on a mini SUV along with Ssangyong

We had mentioned earlier that Mahindra is developing a mini SUV to be priced under Rs. 4 lakh. We have got more information about the mini SUV which is codenamed as S101 and Mahindra is working on this project along with the Ssangyong Motors of South Korea.

Mahindra wants its S101 mini-SUV to be an off-roader along with better fuel efficiency; hence the vehicle is being called as ‘Nano SUV’ by some workers at Mahindra’s shop floors. The S101 mini SUV will be powered by a 1-1.2 liter petrol engine and a 1.5 liter diesel engine. Work on the S101 project began a year ago and the vehicle will roll out of the Mahindra’s Chakan plant in 26-28 months.

The price factor is the major issue as the other mini SUVs in the international markets such as Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Juke and Skoda Yeti are positioned in premium segment. However the S101 will be the first mini SUV under Rs. 4 lakh in India as well as the world over.

A Team of over 100 engineers are working on the S101 project. The project is in its middle stage with styling and customer research work going on at present. According to the company sources, the S101 will be a monocoque vehicle and the plan is to develop different body sheels for Mahindra and Ssangyong vehicle. It is now evident that like the XUV500 Mahindra is planning to internationally with the S101 mini SUV but with a Ssangyong name.

Mahindra Xylo facelift spied

It is barely 2 years old and Mahindra has tried to give a facelift to its MPV Xylo. This is the magnitude of the competition taking place in all the segments in India. The best seller and market leader Honda City is also getting a facelift just after its launch 3 years ago.

We manage to get the spy pictures of the Xylo facelift from oncars.in which mentions that the new Xylo could be a special edition variant. The Xylo spied has clear lens blinkers on the tail lamps, orange coloured indicators on the headlamps and a rear spoiler. In the interior there is steering mounted controls and added new features such as cruise control, voice controls, steering mounted audio and phone controls. There was also an E9 badging on this vehicle as mentioned by oncars.in. Currently Mahindra Xylo comes with a top end E8 variant.

We feel these changes would bring in fresh look to the boring & boxy designed Xylo. Mahindra Xylo received good response when launched but Mahindra could not carry on the hype for too long as it did with the Scorpio. Now with Maruti Ertiga (R3) to be launched soon the Xylo has some serious competition.

Mahindra XUV500 bookings cross 6000 in just 2 days

The latest launch from Mahindra, the XUV500 has already clocked 6000 bookings in just 2 days after its launch. Mahindra has cleverly priced the XUV500 base model at Rs. 10.8 lakh, though it is only the introductory price.

Mahindra XUV500 will compete mainly against Toytoa Fortuner, as intended by the company but we feel the XUV500 has some more enemies. The XUV500 will lock its horns with Force One and soon to be launched facelifted Tata Safari. But comparing the other two models, XUV500 seems to be ahead with them in leaps and bounds.

No wonder the XUV500 has got high bookings. Why would anyone buy a Fortuner if everything it offers is available in XUV500 which is 40% cheaper than the former.

Mahindra’s design issues

We have never seen a good looking vehicle from Mahindra, except the Bolero, thanks to its bold front grill.

Right from MM 540 International to today’s Xylo, Mahindra vehicles have not be able to turn heads. Many of you might argue for Scoprio’s design, but we should tell you, the Scorpio was a hit because it was the first off-roader cum SUV in Indian market with rounded contours. Tata Safari was big flop because of its engine. The Scorpio’s other success secret was its engine.

Coming to the latest W201 SUV design, Mahindra has put some effort to make it stand out from its competitors. The unique door handle design and huge rear wheel arch are some of them to mention. But by the front picture of W201, which was posted on a facebook fan page, the vehicle did not impress us honestly.  It is still premature to say that as we still have not seen the complete picture of the SUV. Let’s wait and see if Mahindra could indeed pull out a head turner.
